giuliomoro Uff, then try the following: power cycle the BBB, then wait a couple of minutes. Then first, sudo ipconfig set en11 dhcp (insert password as/if required), followed by ifconfig en11; ping beaglebone.local and post here the output of these commands.
giuliomoro ok, no worries. Go to System Preferences->Sharing and on the left hand side select "Internet access" and make sure its tickbox is unticked. On the right side select the name of the BBB's network connection (perhaps "AM335x USB" according to one of your previous posts), then click on the "internet access" checkbox to enable it. Now try ping beaglebone.local again and hope for the best
ctrl giuliomoro I tried sharing the connection from both WiFi and AM335x USB itself to computers using AM335x USB, both returned with "(base) lancelotdeMacBook-Pro:~ xinyili$ ping beaglebone.local ping: cannot resolve beaglebone.local: Unknown host"
giuliomoro let's try a different one: have you got an ethernet cable that you could plug into the ethernet port on the BBB and then into your home router? Do you have access to the router's control panel to be able to visualise the IP address that is assigned to the board that you'll connect to it?
ctrl giuliomoro I only have got one ethernet cable which is currently used to connect the router and the interface on the wall. If I pull it down and plug it to the BBB, I will not have access to the router's control panel. So maybe I'll get another ethernet cable tomorrow and try again! Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it.
giuliomoro ultimately what I think is happening is that this BBB is very old and has some unknown version of the Beaglebone image on it, which somehow doesn't come up via USB. I hope it does via ethernet. Once we are in, we can validate whether its micro SD card reader actually does work and take it from there ...
ctrl giuliomoro Okay! This makes sense since this Bela board is from the university. See you tomorrow!
giuliomoro actually hold on a second. can you run the following on your computer: connect the board (without SD card, without button) wait two minues what does ls /dev/tty.* return?
giuliomoro ctrl Without button the board won't appear in the 'Network' place. And here's the output. so it only appears there with the button but without the micro SD card????
giuliomoro this is getting weirder and weirder ... anyhow, boot it up however you manage and run the above please
ctrl giuliomoro I boot it up and waited for 2 minutes before running the command. And the output is the same
ctrl giuliomoro Hi! I'm back with the control panel. I don't know if the BBB's IP address is included in this page. But I do have booted and connected it, since both of the lights of the ethernet port are on.
giuliomoro Hmm is there a list of connected devices and their IPs somewhere? Btw is the board alive and booted?
ctrl giuliomoro Yes the board is alive and booted, assigned with a IP address starts with 169.254 in network settings. But there's nothing else in the control panel that looks like the board's IP address except from the screenshot above.
giuliomoro ctrl Yes the board is alive and booted, assigned with a IP address starts with 169.254 in network settings. that is the address on the USB connection, but we are interested in the IP on the ethernet side. According to your router's manual, you should be able to find the device list like this:
ctrl giuliomoro Or I'll go to the university store tomorrow to see if they could give me another Bela board and test it.
