CPU time limit exceeded

I bought my Bela to play with music, but I've been sidetracked into using it for a sensor logging application.
Got so far with it then decided I wanted to be able to switch log files at some point so I've been looking at the WriteFile code. Have yet to figure out how to close and reopen while running, but as I was looking at it I thought I'd modify it to write 'int' data rather than 'float's. Renamed it to WriteIntFile and compiled all OK, but when I run it under the IDE it won't stop when I press the STOP button. When I wrote it I hadn't realised there was a 'STOP' button on the board, so I'd put in code to set GShouldStop when one of my external buttons was pressed, but then I found out about the onboard Stop button and commented out my code to stop.
At this point the IDE seems to fail to stop the program, though connecting in it does appear to have gone away. The build button continues circling and won't restart the build process.
I then reinstated the code to set gShouldStop and tried again. This time it does stop, but the IDE reports:

I clearly am messing things up somewhere, but have yet to figure out where.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Ahhh! realised the problem - I was looping in render when the button was pressed, clearly for too long!

But I'm back to the problem of the IDE saying that the program is still running, even though it has stopped.

I check the button state and simply set gShouldStop = true; when the button is pressed.

The Build button on the IDE keeps circling. When I press STOP, it says "Stopping Bela" for a couple of seconds, then the message disappears and scrolls back to the original "Running project..." message.

I've reverted to the original WriteFile code, got rid of my version, so it should be as near to when it was behaving normally....

You are experiencing a known issue, which has been fixed in the dev branch, but the fix has not yet been merged into the master branch.

You will want to update your code to the dev branch, as explained here

That was scary!
I downloaded the dev version and followed the advice in the link you gave. The IDE went away and I got an unable to connect message. After several retries and quite a few minutes there was still no response.
However, I could login with ssh, so it wasn't totally dead. issued a 'reboot' and things came back up, including IDE.

Tried running my program again:
first time: pressed my 'stop' button and it stopped, but gave the message:
67237 mode switches detected on audio thread!
second attempt seemed to be OK.
I just copied and pasted the above message and it disappeared from the IDE console log!?
The copy worked as it pasted in above.

hmm not sure why the IDE failed to restart after update, will look into that. The number of mode switches displayed when you hit stop should not be there, it is an error in the parser, nothing to worry about.

incidentally, if you want to manually restart the IDE, go to the scripts/ folder and do

./ide.sh start
