The full-scale output level of the Audio I/O are 2.5Vpp, that is 1.2dBu or -1.1dBV. That is well above the "consumer" line level (-10dBV) and close enough to the "pro" line level (4dBu). For what application do you find it too low? Note that these outputs are not designed to be used with headphones.
The maximum level for the DAC setting should be 0dB. Negative values will reduce the gain. Positive values will be ignored.To make a setting change effective, you have to restart the running program.

That is normal: if you send a value larger than the -1 to 1 range this will be hard-clipped at the converter output.

what does this mean? where do you "receive" it?
