the actual error is not shown (you need to scroll farther back), but it's probably that you should remove const from

const uint8_t *data = event.getData();

If it fails with a different error (discarding const qualifier etc), then do this instead

    midi.writeOutput((uint8_t*)data, length);

I've spent the last few days trying to get my RNBO patch in order. Got something going, loaded onto Salt. IDE gave many "underrun detected" warnings but seemed to build & run fine, but I wasn't hearing the expected sound. Tried powering externally... totally crashed the bela (had to re-flash) and badly bricked my midi fighter twister (had to order a new one). I'm prepping shows next weekend so this is pretty rough.

Again I'm trying to use Salt to replace my normal (extensive) Ableton-M4L setup, for purposes of hardware/synth-focused shows. But I think maybe the Bela is not really able to run such a complex patch? Not sure how there could've been such a catastrophic failure.

Sorry to hear that, any clue on what happened there? What do you mean "powering externally"? The only way that would've damaged a usb-connected device would be if power was out of spec, possibly more than 5V provided to the board.

No clue. "powering externally" i just mean eurorack power instead of usb connection to computer.

Now abandoning c++ and returning to pd, which i've successfully used before in a limited way. would you be able to help me get cyclone and else external libraries implemented on bela? then i'll get out of your hair.

The command you are running fails because it's running in the ~/Bela folder instead of the external's folder.

I recommend to upload prebuilt externals, or buld them outside the IDE. See here for some prebuilt externals https://github.com/BelaPlatform/Bela/issues/621

RNBO doesn't produce particularly efficient c++ code, so on the first generation Bela it is limited in what it can achieve. Still - even if with underruns - you should hear at least something.

Do you mean I should, in my project folder, run the code starting with this? v

That's where I'm getting the warnings and it stops. I believe that the pre-built externals procedure should completely replace the Installation procedure described at the top of the page here, i.e., I wouldn't need a dummy project called pd-externals. Am I mistaken about that?

In the image you posted you are not executing the command from within the external's folder, rather from the ~/Bela folder, as denoted by the ~/Bela prompt.

You have two options for obtaining built externals:

build them yourself from the terminal, or
use the ones provided here

Once you have a built an external and have a suitable *.pd_linux file, you should copy it to one of two possible locations:

your project folder (to make them accessible only to this project), or
to the pd-externals pseudo project (to make them accessible to all projects)

The installation procedure at the top of issue 621 explains how to do the latter after getting the file onto the board by temporarily uploading it to a project.

I may be misunderstanding something. I would like to upload my own Pd patch in a project called testExt, while using a dummy project called pd-externals to hold the cyclone zip archives. I created a new Pd project named pd-externals. I clicked Upload Files and chose pd-cyclone-cyclone0.3rc1.zip. I ran:

mkdir -p /root/Bela/projects/pd-externals

then:

cd /root/Bela/projects/pd-externals && unzip /root/Bela/projects/pd-externals/pd-cyclone-cyclone0.3rc1.zip && rm /root/Bela/projects/pd-externals/pd-cyclone-cyclone0.3rc1.zip

It seemed to unzip successfully. Then following the cyclone instructions on issue 621, I ran the below but got warnings/ it didn't work.

make PDINCLUDEDIR=/usr/local/include/libpd/

This is where I think I'm misunderstanding what directory I should be working in. I tried a few cd variations, no dice.

For reproducibility purposes (and license compliance), the issue provides a link to the source, followed by instructions on how to build that source and turn it into a zip file. That zip file is then attached there. To install the zip file, use the instructions at the top of the page:

mkdir -p /root/Bela/projects/pd-externals
cd /root/Bela/projects/pd-externals && unzip /root/Bela/projects/PROJECT_NAME/ZIP_FILE.zip &&  rm /root/Bela/projects/PROJECT_NAME/ZIP_FILE.zip

You only need the build instructions if you want to rebuild it (e.g.: for using a newer or modified version of the external), but not for using the zip archive that is attached.

In your case, from what I can see from the list of files that were uncompressed, the zip archive is not the one I provided, rather it's a zip of the source code. You'd need to cd pd-cyclone-cyclone0.3.rc1 for the make command to be successful. There where you are, you are in the parent folder.

If you use the zip archive that's attached there you only need the installation step:

mkdir -p /root/Bela/projects/pd-externals
cd /root/Bela/projects/pd-externals && unzip /root/Bela/projects/PROJECT_NAME/ZIP_FILE.zip &&  rm /root/Bela/projects/PROJECT_NAME/ZIP_FILE.zip

where PROJECT_NAME is any project that you are temporarily using to upload the zip archive via the IDE.

That's all you need.

If you want to build the external from scratch, then you should use the instructions in each external's section, which assume that you are within the external's source folder. In your screenshot you are running make PDINCLUDEDIR=/usr/local/include/libpd/ from within the pd-externals folder, but I doubt you have the external's source files in there?
