so, the title says it all...

since enzienheavy will shut down the 31. of august, what will the roadmap be for heavy users on bela? will there be a bela heavy server? or will we all download the heavy compiler and use it locally? (it will be open source it says)

thanks for some insights, if there are some already...

Hi,
we got to know about this last week. First and foremost, don't despair! We are committed to providing a great Pd experience on Bela. We do not intend to leave you, or anyone else, without options on the projects you've created.

Enzien's commitment to make the Heavy compiler open source means I'm sure we will find an alternate way for our users to continue to access it. However, it will take us some time to plan the next steps.

In my opinion, the bare minimum option is to have the heavy compiler running on the board. That may be (extremely?) slow at compiling, but it would be self-contained and require zero setup time. Another option (longer setup time, faster compile time) would be for the user to build it for their platform and run it locally. I don't think we will be in the position of offering an online build server just now.
All of this is just speculating, because we have not had a look at the source code and we have no idea of how complex it will be to build this and what the dependencies are.

However, most likely our effort will be limited to allow current Heavy/Bela users to keep running their projects and we will not be maintaining, improving or even supporting the Heavy project itself, given the limited resources we have available. As such, we shall deprecate Heavy and discourage its use on new projects .

Check back again in a couple of weeks.

thanks for the heads up! a self contained version of heavy on the board sounds like a very good idea. a cross compiler would also be nice for sure! and, i'm sure there must be someone willing to work on this in the pd community! i think it would be a shame to let it waste...
