Updating Bela

Total newbie, Trying to get the D-box started but have a few issues
1. Page 37 of assembly guide, I downloaded the zip as described but when trying to update bela error "not a valid zip archive"
2. Ran the Run command anyway, made it halfway through then got the error "Could not open directory usersounds"

Ideas?

You'll need to update Bela for the D-Box software to run properly. I assume you went through the instructions here? Just make sure that when you download the zip archive it doesn't get expanded automatically by your browser.
I think you may have to download some files for the dbox from here ? @andrew knows better

Yes, I did go through those instructions and it created a zip called Bela-Maser with sub folders core, examples and others. It says it's a zip file but I don't know how to tell if my chrome browser expanded it. I have the sound files.

if you are on MacOS, by clicking on an archive in Finder or in Chrome it will be automatically uncompressed and a folder with the same name is created.
Make sure when you select the file to upload that you select the original zip archive and not the folder. They will typically have different icons (as well as a different extension, but your system may be hiding the extension)

I'm on windows 10. The File name is Bela-Master.zip but has the folder Bela-master with subfolders core, examples etc. Is there another way to get the file needed? Is Bela-master.zip the correct file?

Bela-Master.zip is the correct file. Are you sure you are selecting the zip archive and not an uncompressed version of the file?

To wrap up: this is apparently due to something strange happening with the upload button on any browser on Windows 10. While we are working to solve this, the workaround to update Bela while on Windows 10 is described here
The OP managed to update through the described workaround.
