Hello, I am in Colombia and connected my Bela which has UK connection, using a common adaptor from UK to American connexion. After about 2 minutes, I had a spark, a "pop" and smoke. I disconnected all the Bela and the power. Before trying it again I wonder if I should use a different power cable for it while in Colombia. Many thanks for any help! Ximena

Hi Ximena,
sounds like that's dead, unfortunately - the smoke is a clear indicator. Whether the spark is due to your adapter or something else in the circuit I don't know ... I don't see why your UK adapter would provide a voltage above 5V when plugged into Colombia's 110V mains. The fact it took 2 minutes and ended in smoke could point to an overvoltage on the line but that seems somehow unlikely, too. Did you have anything else connected to the Bela? That could be a more likely suspect.

FWIW, my Belas in Colombia behave just fine and also the ones at Medellin's MAMM.

Hi Giulio, many thanks for answering. Bela is not dead. Yes, I had wires connected to connect to a Trill Craft. The pop came from these wires. Great I will use my Bela at Medellin's MAMM

Hi Giulio I am guessing yes, they were touching each other... that was the problem. The Trill craft was not connected. I am now again with Bela connected but without the power. Just with the USB . When really do I need the power for the Bela? Thanks for the tips! And wonderful you worked on that installation. Yes, I will experience it! Best! Ximena

The barrel jack is only needed if you want to use the on-board speaker amplifier. Everything else will work fine when powered from the USB connector.
