Cannot connect to Bela after image update

Do you get any notifications that a USB device is connected and whether you want to allow it? Macos has started doing that with every new device you connect, so if you've updated macos, it may be that you should allow that?
What's the behaviour of the LEDs on the board? One fixed one and several flickering ones?

Yes, one fixed and several flickering right after the connection after it calms down to one fixed and one with "heart beat".

Then the boards are most definitely fine. I would investigate the cable, adapters and so and any blocks the OS may have interposed.

As you have a big Bela, you can do the following to check that minis and cables are ok:

power the big bela
ssh onto it
run dmesg -w
connect the BelaMini to it
do you see any new lines being printed?
