AES67 as Audio Output

Hello Bela Forum,

I have a question about Aes67 on Bela.
I built this aes67 daemon:

on the v0.5.0alpha2 firmware. It build and runs fine, I can set up Bela as a aes67 sender and receiver via the webui and its recognized in dante etc as such.

Now, next step is to actually send audio from Supercollider etc from Bela over aes67.
The daemon uses the RAVENNA AES-67 ALSA driver. Is it possible to use ALSA audio drivers on bela? and if it is, can i stiill utilise Belas real time audio?

great news, I looked into this when AES67 came out circa 2015 but it was the wild west back then.

Yes, but we don't support that workflow. That's as simple as installing a beagleboard-provided image and loading the BB-AUDI-02 device tree overlay. Only the audio codec would work (no "analog" or "digital" I/Os in the Bela sense of the term) and no real-time or low-latency guarantees: once you are in Linux domain you lose those guarantees. If instead you want to keep a low-latency on-board path for supercollider with digital and analog I/Os, then you'd need a ugen that can send/receive to an ALSA device via a RT-safe high-latency pipe.

If you would want to do this in C++ (using both Bela I/O with ALSA/AES67) I assume it would work the similar: render() generates audio, audio goes into Pipe to an AuxTask which calls ALSA functions?

Yes. I made this a long time ago trying to get audio in from the hots via USB. The code is still ALSA-generic: https://github.com/BelaPlatform/Bela-ALSA-bridge
