• Trill
  • Now use Trill with Python

While you can program the Trill sensors with C, a popular language is Python, so I have written a very unofficial library that reads the Trill sensors from Python. This is in the MagPi magazine out today, available in newsagents, or on line, or free PDF download.
There is a video of it in action at

This is the final part of the MIDI Guitar and Trill touch sensor projects. Published in The Mag Pi number 105, May 2021. Here we see how the Trill touch Guitar modes operate, and how it can be played. Apologies in advance for my "singing", try and imagine someone good doing it. My version of House of the Rising Sun got flagged by someone claiming they had copyright on the melody. They dropped this claim when I pointed out it was a "traditional" song and you can't have copyright on a traditional song. The pub called the Rising Sun is situated on the A6 south of Stockport where the Macclesfield road splits off the A6. It has been called that since the 1950's to my knowledge, probably much longer.

Thank you for sharing this Mike, it's a brilliant set of resources and a great instrument at the end of the process. If it's alright with you I'd love to summarise the four articles into a blog post on blog.bela.io where we'll host the video and link to the Mag Pi editions.

Sure that's fine. Do you want me to send you the videos? Glad you liked it. I came across the Bella / Trill sensors last year at the NIME, I got a free pass into the virtual conference through my work with Drake Music labs (North) Manchester. Can't wait for real meetings to start again so they can try it out for themselves.

Grumpy_Mike Brilliant, no need to send over the videos as we can just embedded the youtube links. One thing which would be useful to send is any extra photographs from the build process. If you have some please send to robert@bela.io

Happy to hear that you encountered Bela / Trill at NIME last year, for us it set the standard very high for virtual events! We also have had various connections with Drake in London over the years – a great organisation. Here's to real meetings starting again soon!
